Torrico Dominates First Straw Poll in Democratic Primary for Attorney General
Assembly Majority Leader and Democratic candidate for California Attorney General Alberto Torrico dominated the strongly contested San Mateo County Democratic Straw Poll on Sunday afternoon, receiving more votes than the rest of the candidates for Attorney General combined.
Torrico spoke to hundreds of Democratic activists gathered at the South San Francisco Conference Center, recounting his history of fighting for workers’ rights, safe communities and access to quality education.
After the vote, he thanked the local Democrats for their “strong show of support for a campaign that is going to fight the hardest for the most vulnerable. Whether it is families losing their homes because of mortgage fraud, young Californians losing their access to higher education because we don’t adequately fund our colleges and universities, or mothers and fathers who are losing their children to gangs – I am going to be a champion for the smartest policies to make California stronger and safer.â€
Torrico’s overwhelming victory in this early political test is just the most recent in a series of important campaign milestones. Torrico was recently endorsed by California’s largest law enforcement group, the Peace Officers Research Association of California, representing more than 62,000 rank and file police officers. And Torrico finished the first half of the year with more cash on hand than any of the other Democratic candidates for Attorney General.
The final vote totals were:
Torrico 85 votes (51%), Harris 44 votes (27%), Kelly 31 votes (19%), Lieu 5 votes (3%), Delgadillo 1 vote, and Nava 0 votes.
