Alberto Torrico for Attorney General

California law enforcement understands the single most important step to protecting our state is improving our public schools. That’s why organizations representing more than 100,000 police officers, deputy sheriffs, firefighters and first responders have joined Alberto Torrico for Attorney General.
For Torrico, improving education to secure safety is not an abstract theory. He knows from his own life and work that great schools, colleges and universities are the building blocks of a safer California.

Torrico Understands Education Is The Path to Safety

For the first time in our state’s history, the government spent more money on prisons than higher education.  Torrico knows we need to reform prisons and he recognizes that education is the key to our future and public safety.

As head of the Select Committee on Prison Reform and Rehabilitation, Torrico understands that education is the best way to shut the revolving door of our prison system - where 70 percent of released prison inmates return after three years. He is fighting to reform the prisons by requiring inmates to rehabilitate themselves through work, study or treatment before they are released.

The facts prove that education creates strong communities.  That’s why Torrico is working to expand preschool in every neighborhood so kids start school ready to learn.

And Torrico is leading the fight to lower college tuition by taking on big oil with an extraction fee that can’t be passed on to consumers.

The California Dream is Born in California's Schools

Alberto Torrico is the son of immigrant parents – his father was born in Bolivia and his mother’s family is from Japan. Growing up in a humble neighborhood in Fremont, California, Torrico’s parents worked long hours as school janitors to provide a better education and a safer community for their children. While in high school, Torrico worked the night shift alongside his parents, earning money that would help him become the first member of his family to graduate from college. With the support of his family, Torrico earned a law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Soon after, Torrico began teaching classes to new citizens at San Jose Evergreen Community College while building a successful legal practice representing workers and labor unions.

Public Safety Agrees - Improve Our Public Schools

As a candidate for California Attorney General, Alberto Torrico has won the endorsement of California’s two largest public safety organizations because the 62,000-member strong Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) and the 30,000 first responders of the California Professional Firefighters agree that the best way to protect public safety is to invest in education. Torrico’s rapidly growing support includes the California Federation of Teachers, Operating Engineers Local 3, the Communications Workers of America Local 9421, and local public safety organizations from around California, including: Oakland Police Officers’ Association, the Los Angeles School Police Association, the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Alameda County, the Contra Costa Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, the Fresno Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, the Fresno Police Officers’ Association, the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers’ Association, the Ontario Police Officers’ Association, the Sacramento Police Officers’ Association, the San Bernardino County Safety Employees’ Benefit Association, the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of San Diego County, the San Jose Police Officers’ Association, the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Santa Clara County, the Stockton Police Officers’ Association and many more.

A Record of Reform

Torrico’s passion for using the law to transform lives first inspired him to run for office in the East Bay at the age of 32. Torrico served three years on the Newark City Council before winning election to the California State Assembly.

As a State Legislator representing portions of Alameda and Santa Clara Counties, Torrico has held a number of key leadership posts, including Assembly Majority Leader and most recently, Chair of the Select Committee on Prison Reform. In his years in the Assembly, Torrico has been named Legislator of the Year by the California State Firefighters Association, Peace Officers Research Association of California and the California State University Students Association.

In Sacramento, Torrico embodies the life experience of the emerging California majority. Torrico made history as the first member of the California Assembly to sit in both the Latino Legislative Caucus and Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. Torrico’s ability to build successful coalitions and bridge ideological barriers has led to the passage of 38 of the legislative measures he’s authored, with 27 of them being signed into law by the state’s Republican governor.

Education Creates Stronger Communities

Alberto Torrico’s commitment to education and safety is not just a professional goal – it’s a personal mission. His brother Cesar is a school principal and brother Fabian is a veteran San Jose Police Officer, family connections that enforce his commitment to public safety through education.
